Owl Obsession Oblivion

Standard

You know the rules!

The Sparkly Toad does NOT buy patterns.

Sure, she hopes to SELL them someday…but not today…

I love, love, love Owl Obsession by Marken of The Hat and I.

And I confess, she has me beat. 🙂 There are some parts to the pattern I can’t quite manage. Yet!

The most perplexing matter was joining the owl motifs to the solid colored background.
image

I made several attempts, but the backside came out lumpy, bumpy awful.
Not nice for a sweet baby gift.

So we invented our own version! And used applique instead of joined motifs.

Here are the first hexie attempts:

I like the pattern so much! It needs a name. Something with SNOW, I think. It almost seems a pity to sew anything over it. I may make another and leave it plain.

One to go!

And now with the owls…
image

That’s as far as we are today! It was a lovely holiday weekend.
♡ Thank you to my sweet husband who has been in service to our country for over 20 years.

I spent last evening perusing edging options. I’ll keep you updated!
Happy hooking!

Update…the triangles are in! Still contemplating the edging.

Monkey Love

Standard

Okay, enough with the afghans! Last week it snowed. Twice. This week it is eighty and humid!

Too hot to make blankets?

Amigurumi time!

You remember Mr. Giraffe?
image

No, not that one, let me try again…
image

There he is! And now I have had requests for several more, not suprisingly. He IS cute!

Thankfully I wrote the pattern out well enough to decipher my scribbled notes.

But now onto something new…his cousin, little Miss Monkey!

Appendages first!
image

There we are…now head and trunk…
image

Nicely done. And now, all sewn and garnished:
image

Not bad for my first try! And no pattern. I’ve several ideas in mind for the next ones!

But first, a few more giraffes!

Legs are coming along nicely.

Want to make your own? These are my designs, but I started with (and loosely based them on) this wonderful free pattern, making a zebra, tiger, frog, duck and several darling teddy bears last year as gifts:

Happy creature-crafting!

Crazy Square Days

Standard

I am so excited! Mikey (from The Crochet Crowd) was right. He posted this afghan on facebook and said it took two days. Whaaaaat?!? It actually made me a little grumpy– mostly because I was drowning in to-do lists and toddlers and wishing for a quiet evening of crochet, at the time!

I soothed myself by sorting my yarn.
First, a bit of winding…and untangling!
image

Then to choose the colors…I meant to have eleven, but somehow it ended up at ten, I discovered later. I think…I’m still not sure, as I get interrupted every time I go to count. There are eight children here, even now as I write this, arguing over whose turn it is to hold the baby…

So my colors…
image

I gathered them in a basket, and there they sat. It was at least a week. In the meantime, I DID order a new hook, and it arrived! I think I posted that before, my apologies, but here it is again…
image

Then I found a few minutes one evening and whipped off the first three rounds– such pretty flowers!
image

I love the variety of color! It wasn’t a quiet weekend (May is always full of things), but I did have a few more hours to hook. The end table piled up nicely.

image

And Monday night I finished the final round of color!

Here are the squares:

And the octagons with one round to go…

Now for the layout! Here’s a rough draft:

And a sneak peek of a few of my helpers…

Over The Hump

Standard

It’s only Tuesday!

But I made it past “hump day” already, since I have been attacking my-chores-I-like-to-avoid since yesterday morning with vigor!

Yucky paperwork and icky bills, no-fun phone calls and business stuff, all done! And finally, finally, two long-standing, pending orders complete. Now I can PLAY!

But first…HERE IT IS. THE BABY JUNGLE AFGHAN IS COMPLETED!!!
Yay! It has taken soooo long, not so much to make, but to DESIGN. And I loved it. Can’t wait to make a pattern tutorial and offer it for sale in my shop. But I am getting ahead of myself.

I just love all the cute baby animal appliques. Here they are!

And a few close-ups:

And a little jungle foliage:

And all together…
image

All in all it came out quite nicely. How nice to be finished.

I am excited to start another, just-for-fun afghan this week…and my hook arrived early!
image

I had a 5mm already, which I use almost exclusively, and wanted a larger hook.
For this!

I have my basket loaded and ready to go! And, thankfully, my evening is free.
Only one this week!

I’m off. Happy hooking!
